Modern Home in Bainbridge Island with Sustainable Features: Ellice Residence Posted: 15 Mar 2011 07:22 AM PDT Ellice Residence was completed by Coates Design and is located in Bainbridge Island, Washington. According to Trendir, the residence is situated on top of the Yeomalt Bluff and has panoramic views of Puget Sound and the Seattle skyline. The building has a highly welcoming exterior, featuring large windows contrasting the wood and the stone. All these make it integrate well in its beautiful natural surroundings. Ellice Residence is actually a makeover of an old villa. In order to raise the current building, the architects used more than 80% of the materials that resulted from the deconstruction. Moreover, the project has plenty of sustainable characteristics, such as geothermal and photovoltaic systems, heat-recovery technologies, as well as solar water heating systems which ensure a low electric energy consumption.

Revolutionary Support System with Massive Architecture Potential: QuaDor [Video] Posted: 15 Mar 2011 06:20 AM PDT At the Indaba conference in South Africa, architect and Designer Dror Benshetrit announced an amazing new architectural system or “space truss geometry” called QuaDror . The system has massive potential in architecture, construction and even disaster relief. According to the official website, the unique space truss geometry – now named QuaDror – is made from the assembly of four identical L-shaped pieces, either thin resulting in a trestle structure, or thick resulting in a solid panel. The collapsible system allows for rapid assembly and a transition from closed and flat to open and self-standing. A major advantage of this system is that every single panel has the stability and load-bearing capacity of a cube with only 1/5 of the volume. Impressive acoustic properties, less construction time and fewer heavy machineries needed are just some of the features of the QuaDror. Be sure to check out the video at the end of the post for a better understanding.

Bright Two-Floor Apartment in Amsterdam by Hofman Dujardin Posted: 15 Mar 2011 05:15 AM PDT “Spectacular” is a good way to describe this apartment’s display of light and shapes. The interior design created by Hofman Dujardin is perhaps one of the most serene places in terms of light and accents. Covering 140 square meters, the plan is displayed in a spacious manner, with the entertaining room, dining space and kitchen creating a rectangular central space and large windows flanking each end. A spectacular Dear Ingo chandelier by Ron Gilad for moooi is displayed over the kitchen island, creating a hybrid space combining an abstract form with functionality. The recently renovated apartment displays a modern white staircase leading up to the second floor. Here we find a different design style that accentuates the shape of the female body and uses elegant shapes to further deepen the idea of modern elegance. The second floor is home to the two bedrooms, the bathroom and the toilet. An elegant staircase in the main bedroom takes you up to the rooftop terrace for some fresh air. Located in Amsterdam, the two floor apartment is a comfortable and bright living space, created for the enjoyment of its inhabitants.

Original and Colorful Approach to the Classic Bench: “Pylon” Posted: 15 Mar 2011 02:10 AM PDT When we first saw this bench we couldn’t help but immediately associating it with a stack of colorful crayons. According to Dezeen, the Swedish designers Marcus Abrahamsson and Kristoffer Fagerström created this unusual looking seating piece entitled “Pylon”, by using pine batons. Here is a short description from the designers: This sleek seat is based on a traditional bench shape, which has been dramatically transformed into a strikingly futuristic design. Taking inspiration from the pylons towers that support power lines, the designers constructed the base of the bench from twin uprights that anchor the seat the floor. Two layers of thick pine slats are glued together to form the seat, which is gripped between the upper reaches of the base supports. Pylon is a perfect complement to high-design interiors and cutting-edge architecture, or any setting where design takes centre stage. Freshome readers, do you enjoy having colorful furniture elements in you home?

Sit Back and Get Warm: The Radiator Chair by Jeroen Wesselink Posted: 15 Mar 2011 01:51 AM PDT How many times have you leaned your back against the radiator for extra warmth? Here is a way you can do that and be comfortable. According to The Chair Blog, this design was inspired by Gerrit Rietveld’s Zig Zag chair. Jeroen Wesselink came up with the idea to turn a radiator into a chair- or the other way around, we are not quite sure. Either way, the resulting product is original and not to mention practical. The Radiator Chair provides a backrest and a feet support, perfect for those cold winter days when one could use extra comfort and warmth. With a striking yellow finish, the chair could be placed in a bold modern living room or in the kitchen. Even though resting on this type of seating item may not be as “rewarding” as crashing into a fluffy armchair, we’re certain you can see its benefits.

Serene “Upside-Down” Apartment Enriched by Contemporary Art Works Posted: 14 Mar 2011 10:54 AM PDT The apartment was designed by architect Neave Brown for COEN!. We received a few photos and a description from the architects which we would love to share with you: ” This luxurious city apartment is designed by COEN! to create a harmonious whole. A perfect combination of robust, warm and pure materials like wood, stone, glass and marmoleum. The use of sober colors with colorful accents make it a timeless and stylish residential. The apartment is designed upside down: the design studio is placed on the ground floor, the sleeping rooms on the first stock and the living with a beautiful view on top. Art brings color in this sober but warm apartment. Works of Bert Vredegoor, Margriet Smulders, Erwin Olaf and of course work from Coen van Ham himself (Testbeeld, situated in the design studio) have all the attention they need because of the serene surroundings.” Achieving the best possible result using as few means as possible. This is the starting point of designer Coen van Ham. This interior reveals what he means by this. The transparent appearance contributes to the strong look of the functional design. 'But most importantly perhaps is the fact that the focus has been entirely on the people that live in this apartment, and not on the interior,. says the designer. 'I was looking in the visual language of the interior I designed.'

Mixed-Use Townhouse in LA Displaying an Intriguing Contemporary Architecture Posted: 14 Mar 2011 08:48 AM PDT For today we would like to showcase this original looking townhouse located in Venice, California and designed by Dennis Gibbens Architects. Integrated in a commercial coastal neighborhood, the building has an original appearance and is a definite eye-catcher. Here is more from the architects: “This mixed-use project is situated in the middle of a stretch along the boulevard known for its many recent examples of architectural experimentation. The ground floor houses parking and a single retail tenant; the two upper floors contain a single-family residence. The public residential spaces are on the second floor surrounding a private courtyard. The third floor contains bedrooms and a large exterior dining and entertainment deck. The entire shell of the building is constructed of board-formed poured-in-place concrete. Other exterior walls are glass or stucco – non-corrosive materials practical for their use near the ocean. The roughly textured surfaces of the concrete – both inside and out – contrast sharply with the smooth and highly refined finish materials, which include tile, stone, stainless steel, stained woods, and smooth terrazzo floors.” What do you think? Does this building”go” with the famous Kinney Boulevard?
