Mobile World Congress Sees Talk of Android 2.4

Several HTC phones are being reported at MWC as running Android 2.4. There’s been talk about the next version of the OS, but we haven’t heard anything officially official. The word is that 2.4 will still be called Gingerbread, and there’s been a lot of speculation in the last couple of weeks that it will support a lot of Honeycomb features, almost like the tablet-oriented OS brought home to the smartphone. It has not been confirmed whether HTC is stealing Google’s thunder, or whether the press releases just featured some rather unfortunate typos. Some of these phones are due out pretty quickly, though, so if we’re going to see 2.4 on them, Google will likely be making an announcement very soon!

Qualcomm has announced that by 2012, we should start seeing quad-core mobile chips in many mobile devices. This comes just days after we all started seeing dual-core tablets and smartphones becoming much more common at MWC, we just can’t be satisfied with dual-core and 4G. No sir, we need quad-core chips on 8G wireless networks at Lucas like lightspeeds!

Seriously though, these APQ8064 quad-core chips will bring 150% increase in performance over ARM-based chips, and a 65% decrease in power consumption, which is what any mobile device is really after when you get right down to it. Other new chipsets will include the single-core MSM8930 and the dual-core MSM8960. The MSM8930 will best be used for smaller devices with LTE modem chip, while the bigger brother dual-core MSM8960 is designed with smartphones and tablets with multi-tasking priority for power.

New HTC devices launching on several UK carriers

After HTC had a HUGE day at MWC in Barcelona, we now have several UK carriers jumping on the HTC train. Three and O2 announced on their Twitter pages that they’ll be launching the HTC Desire S, while Orange and Vodafone will be adding the Desire S, Wildfire S and ChaCha (a facebook phone) in Q2 of this year.

Three in the UK will also be carrying the HTC Flyer tablet, and thus far is the only carrier to announce the launch. Surprising we haven’t heard anything from T-Mobile UK yet.

The Galaxy Tab 10.1, announced Sunday by Samsung, looks like a pretty slick tablet. If priced fairly, it could be the Android tablet by which others are measured. And now, in the UK, we know where it’s going to land: Vodafone UK will have exclusive carriers rights on the tablet, at least for a while.

It’s been a busy day over at the HTC camp and they are certainly not pulling any punches this year at MWC.  HTC has revealed quite a number of products, so much, that we decided to roll it all up in one huge mega HTC release post for your convenience.  So, without further ado, lets jump right into it.

HTC Flyer Tablet – First up to bat, the highly anticipated and talked about product expected from the Taiwanese handset maker  is the HTC Flyer, a 7-inch tablet with a 1.5 GHz single core processor.  Yes, you read that right, a 1.5 GHz Qualcomm CPU will power this huge Desire looking tablet.  The device will house a 4,000 mAh battery, 1 GB of RAM, 32 GB of storage, a 5 MP camera, 1.3 MP front-facing camera and support WiFi b/g/n protocols.  In addition, it will support Bluetooth 3.0, a microSD card slot, HDMI output support, DLNA technology and come pre-loaded with Android 2.4 as it’s primary OS version. The Umeox Apollo smartphone from Intivation is a fresh new look at how mobile technology can be fused with Green technology. This little device has a solar-powered back, built-in flashlight, and runs Android 2.2. All packed in this neat little body is 320×480 capacitive touchscreen in a 3.2 inch display (about the size of an HTC Magic /T-Mobile MyTouch), bluetooth 2.1, 3 megapixel camera on the rear, 3.5mm headphone jack, MicroSD support, 1GB storage, and 512MB RAM. Also, it’s only 100g weight. thats what you get when you take out those big batteries I guess.

Pretty nice looking device, and a cheap price! $100 is all you’ll need to grab one of these, but don’t expect it to be a super fast device, basic smartphone usage will be lots for it to handle.

Huawei Introduces IDEOS line – X3 Smartphone and X7 Tablet

Huawei made it known that they were going to be announcing their IDEOS X3 and X7 at MWC. Indeed, they held true to their word, releasing the news this morning that the devices will be available second quarter of this year is various European and Asian markets. Full press release after the break.
